Brick-and-mortar shops all across the United States are on the brink of extinction, unsuccessfully combating the rise of online and mobile shoppers. Society continues to pursue the easiest lifestyle possible from their home offices, causing the world of retail to evaporate into thin air.

All kinds of online shopping are stealing the spotlight from retail. Convenient deals are more available today, offering consumers perks like free-shipping and easy return policies. Amazon Prime members have the luxury of free-shipping and cheaper prices. Additionally, Amazon’s sales have quintupled from $16 to $80 billion in the past six years—three times the amount of Sears’s revenue.

It is no secret that malls have been struggling these past few years. Take a look around—the once popping Chesterfield and Mid Rivers malls will never flourish as they used to. There are approximately 1,100 malls still standing in the U.S. today. In ten years, only about 900 are predicted to remain. While malls are not dramatically dying off, they are slowly wasting away to nothing beneath the growing world of e-commerce.

Retail will always have its place, but it’s just not popular anymore among our technologically advanced society. Online shopping is permanently changing the face of American shopping as we know it. The question is, for better or for worse? Next time you think about shopping online, maybe take a trip to Mid Rivers instead.
